The Mind of Christ

For who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
I Corinthians 2:16

There have been moments in my life where I have been in the presence of people who have temporarily lost contact with their minds. Whether through drug use or illness these people have truly lost contact with everything that allowed them to be themselves.Seeing someone “lose their mind” is sobering and frightening.

Seeing that same person regain the use of their mind is to see a person come back to reality.

We use our minds most often to determine who we are, where we are and what we want to do. Our mind informs us in our choices, in our feelings and in actions. To lose touch with our mind is to be adrift, cut lose from reality. Losing our mind makes us useless to the true purpose of our lives which is to glorify God by sustaining love.

Since the mind is so critical to our experience of all things related to life and purpose, what must it mean to us to have the mind of Christ? It means every believer can and should be in touch with the same reality and purpose Jesus is in touch with moment by moment.

His mind should bring to us His choices, feelings and actions that sustain love.

The next time you are in a situation that requires the use of your mind, try this experiment. See the reality with your mind. Once you see how you see the situation, ask Jesus how he views the same reality. Since you have the mind of Christ, you will see that you are capable of seeing what He sees as opposed to what you see. You will notice that He always sees how to love. We usually see how to survive.

For instance, when you are anxious, afraid or bitter that means your mind sees reality in a way that is disturbing the rest of your thoughts, emotions and will. As you are using your mind to sustain and evaluate this view of reality, ask Jesus what His mind sees. Ask Him if His mind is filled with the same thoughts as your mind.

Ask Him, “Jesus, should I be afraid or continue on? Should I be anxious or rest? Should I remain bitter or forgive?” You will immediately know His mind when you ask. You have the mind of Christ right now.

There is a choice we need to make as believers. We need to ask which mind--ours or His—will be the mind that we prefer not to lose. Considering the power of Jesus’ life, joy and love, the choice of which mind should become most precious to us is obvious to a sincere follower of Jesus.

There was a campaign once that said “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Since that is true of my mind or yours, think of the waste of living as if one does not have the mind of Christ.

Over time, your mind will become one with His mind. When that happens, love will be sustained and God will be glorified.
