WWJD or JWWYHUDRN?
I have been enjoying the book The Saving Life of Christ and The Mystery of Godliness by Major W. Ian Thomas. How did I miss this book for so long?
Here is a good example of why I like the book. Thomas says… "God did not create you to have just an ape-like capacity to imitate God. There would be no mystery in that, nor would this lift you morally much above the status of a monkey or a parrot! The capacity to imitate is vested in the one who imitates and does not derive from nor necessarily share the motives of the person being imitated, who remains passive and impersonal to the act of imitation."
Read that a few times! It is worth understanding.
Here is what I hear Thomas saying. The famous imitation question WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) is not enough to be true Christianity. Simply trying to figure out what Jesus would do and imitating that is far beneath being one with Jesus. It is far beneath a believer doing what they do while abiding in Jesus as their moment by moment source and stimulus.
When confronted with a choice, it is better to ask Him personally "Jesus, what would you have us do right now?" I know JWWYHUDRN is too long to remember and won't fit easily on a wristband, but it is the reality we should live. Who said Christianity needed to fit on a wristband anyway? Christianity is "Christ in you" not Christ on your wrist reduced to your best imitation of Him.
I like authors who point me more and more toward "Christ in you the hope of glory." I hope you do, too.
